What is an ADSL Central Splitter?
An ADSL Splitter enables the ADSL signal to be separated onto it’s own pair of cables leaving your other cables in the house free of this signal for plain old telephone services (POTS). This can usually improve the performance of your ADSL and significantly reduce dropouts of the ADSL and also eliminate “buzz” or noise on your phone line.
What is an in-line ADSL Filter?
An in-line filter is a small device (about the size of a matchbox) that often comes supplied with an ADSL modem or router. It is designed to plug into your telephone outlet so that the ADSL device (modem or router) and a telephone can be plugged in and each device is filtered from the other.
Can I just use an in-line filter?
In many cases, if you have a good phone line running into your house from the street and have no monitored alarm system installed, an in-line filter will work well at ensuring your ADSL signal is filtered and is not interupted or degraded by the use of the phone.
Do I need an in-line filter or Central Splitter if I have a Naked ADSL Service?
Most likely not. As you are not using your phone to make telephone calls, your ADSL will probably work fine. However, cabling issues in your house can cause problems.
What type of cabling problems could exist in my house?
If your house has not been wired recently or wired by an experienced licensed cabler originally, you may have various issues which could affect your ADSL. Issues such as:
- multiple lines connected over time to run to different rooms, the shed or "add on" extensions
- an alarm system which uses or used to use the phone line to "call back" to the alarm company
- intercom systems which utilise the phone lines in the house
- poor jointing or connections of the phone cables in the walls or roof
- corroded wall sockets or pins
If I have ADSL issues, what do Power On Solutions recommend and offer?
We can supply and install a C10 ADSL Central Splitter. We will ensure that if you have an alarm, it is sfiltered as an unfiltered alarm can cause problems with ADSL, and it can add noise to the phone line. We can also check the condition of the cabling in your house. If it is old or questionable, we can replace the cabling from the newly installed splitter to the outlet where your ADSL device is to be located. This of course depends on the structure of the house and access to the cabling.
How much does it cost?
We charge a flat rate of $220.00 GST inclusive for the supply and installation of an ADSL Central Splitter for residences within 15kms of the CBD. This rate covers one hour of labour for our technicians to allow for difficult access and cable location. If our technician discovers upon arrival that your residence is going to be problematic or will require more time to complete this work, they will let you know. You can then choose to continue with the work or cancel at no charge if you do not wish to invest the money on the issue.
For additional work, we charge $88.00 GST inclusive per hour ongoing, plus materials. Typically, materials rarely exceed $60.00 GST inclusive for a new outlet installation (just as an example). You can discuss estimated costs with the technician on-site before authorising the work, as you may want additional outlets, or maybe some Ethernet links between rooms.
Do Power On Solutions guarantee that the work will improve my ADSL service?
Unfortunately we cannot offer this guarantee. The 10-30 meters of cabling within your house is often a very small part of the entire cable that runs from the local Exchange to your residence. As licensed cablers, we are only allowed to conduct work to the network boundary of your house. The network boundary is where the street cable joins your house (usually a small black, grey or cream box on the external wall or eave of your building). It is illegal for us to touch cables beyond this point.
Most of the time, the work we do will improve your ADSL, and it cane be a significant improvement in speed and or reliability.
In some cases, the street cabling is a greater cause of issues. Most ISP's and telcos will require that you at least have your own cabling attended to before you ask them to investigate issues beyond your house, and our invoice with license number on it is proof that you have had this work completed by a licensed and qualified technician.
How do I book a Central Splitter Installation?
The easiest way is to use our enquiry form. If you prefer to call us, please call our main number 08 87123 2173 or speak to David direct on 0418 817 287.
Do you service areas beyond 15 kms from the CBD?
Yes we do. Please call us to discuss pricing. We do charge a travel rate of $55.00 GST inc per hour, but we may be able to reduce this and fit your job in with other work in your area if you don't mind scheduling this.
